Before incorporation, Fugue focused on film and theatre. A short film, Fugue, in 2001 and two one-act plays, which premiered on Granville Island in the summer of 2003, were produced under the name Fugue Productions.

In 2004, the producer changed focus to produce solely theatre, thus, incorporating as a not-for-profit society. Consequently, she created Fugue Free Theatre and became its Artistic Director.

In 2007, Fugue Free Theatre became simply Fugue Theatre.
